Dog looking up

September 15, 2012

From Alciatus’ Emblemata:

CLXV, inanis impetus

Lunarem noctu, ut speculum, canis inspicit orbem,

Seque videns, alium credit inesse canem,

Et latrat: sed frustra agitur vox irrita ventis,

Et peragit cursus surda Diana suos.

Misapprehension

Dog looking up to the moon’s ball as to a glass by night

And seeing himself there, must think “another dog’s on it!”

And bark in vain: for one wind sweeps away the startled cry.

Disdainful Moon keeps following her walkway through the sky.
